Built in mid-flight

Permuto Capital wanted people who had never touched crypto to buy stocks on a blockchain. It's a simple sentence and a hard product. The business logic was complicated before anyone wrote a line of code, and every flow needed retries and security layers on top of it, none of which the person on the other side of the screen should ever have to see.

Permuto came to me through Chia, whose blockchain the stocks would live on, and it wanted the whole product built, from the first idea to full engineering. Before the build, I made every decision that would be expensive to undo later, the tech stack, the database, every third-party integration down to the libraries behind sign-in and passkeys, and how the product would stay in sync with Chia's blockchain. The first set I proposed held, so when Permuto came back a few months later with its first flows, the build started on ground that was already settled.

My team was Permuto's development team, and the job was making all of that weight feel like a few clicks. Permuto would bring me a rough flow of how they saw it working. I'd rework it, design it and build it with my team, then stress-test and audit it to find the edge cases and build the logic that handles each one.

Chia's blockchain is too big for any one person to know, so for every feature Permuto needed, whether a clawback, a redemption or something only Chia's chain could do, my team found the engineer at Chia who had built that part and learned from them how it was meant to work. The flows kept changing under the build, like a plane being built in mid-flight, across several environments at once, and for most of the errors that came from the chain, my team found the root cause before the engineers who had built it.

A single flow used to take Permuto months just to draw. When they brought me a rough one, my team had it built end to end in about three days. When there was nothing on paper yet, it went from the idea to production in about a week, and it worked the first time. Permuto is live, and my team still maintains it.
